About this deal

We have an ongoing theme with Alison too, who is let down by those she worships but goes on to worship others - though unlike Angela, she's otherwise pretty likeable. A German audio drama named Hanni & Nanni, [1] produced by EUROPA. Up to 2019, 65 episodes have been published, the storyline differs from the books, especially the later episodes. The two girl twins, Patricia and Isabel O'Sullivan, having just finished school at the elite school called Redroofs, are expected to move on to senior school. While most of their friends at their old school, two of them Mary and Frances Waters, are moving to the equally elite Ringmere, the twins' parents are reluctant to send them to an expensive school as they are afraid the twins might become spoilt and snobbish. Furious at their parents' refusal to send them to the school of their choice, the twins are determined to be as difficult as possible at St. Clare's. Early editions of the books had lively illustrations by W. Lindsay Cable. There are three additional titles available, written by Pamela Cox, who is also writing additional titles for the Malory Towers series. St. Clare's Books

To her enormous annoyance nobody seemed to notice it. As a matter of fact, they took so little notice of her at all that if she had suddenly grown a moustache and worn riding-boots they wouldn't have bothered. Who wanted to pay any attention to Gwen? She had never done anything to make herself liked or trusted, so the best thing to do was to ignore her. Capitalising on her success, with a loyal and ever-growing readership, [15] Blyton produced a new edition of many of her series such as the Famous Five, the Five Find-Outers and St. Clare's every year in addition to many other novels, short stories and books. In 1946 Blyton launched the first in the Malory Towers series of six books based around the schoolgirl Darrell Rivers, First Term at Malory Towers, which became extremely popular, particularly with girls. [45] Peak output: 1949–1959 [ edit ] Most of her editors at publishing companies would hardly have bothered to read the books and not noticed that 'Alf' had suddenly become 'James' (orJoan/Joanna), it would have just been 'Thanks Miss Blyton, when can you deliver the next story in the series?'.Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's. Enid Blyton's unseen novel 'Mr Tumpy's Caravan' discovered", Hindustan Times, 23 February 2011, archived from the original on 11 June 2014 , retrieved 28 March 2014 Thompson, Mary Shine; Keenan, Celia (2006), Treasure Islands: Studies in Children's Literature, Four Courts Press, ISBN 978-1-85182-941-5

St. Clare's Sequels

Smallwood, Imogen (1989), A Childhood at Green Hedges: A Fragment of Autobiography by Enid Blyton's Daughter, Methuen Young Books, ISBN 978-0-416-12632-7 I know what you mean, Belly, and it's something that stands out (to me, anyway) in the first book in particular, rather than throughout the series. I consider The Twins at St. Clare's to be "different" from the rest of Blyton's school stories. The tone is more old-fashioned somehow, and the plot episodic and not as well worked out. I don't feel that the threads involving different characters are woven together very skilfully, so there's a disjointed and awkward feel to the narrative. St. Clare's, a girls' boarding school which predates Malory Towers, is described by one parent as "a very sensible sort of school" but it is also a place of madcap schemes, games and jollity. Blyton, Enid (2013b) [1963], Secret Seven: 15: Fun For The Secret Seven, Hachette Children's Books, ISBN 978-1-84456-949-6 And ignore her they did, though poor Gwen was doing her best to be sensible and likeable now. She had left it a bit too late!

A.H. Thompson, who compiled an extensive overview of censorship efforts in the United Kingdom's public libraries, dedicated an entire chapter to "The Enid Blyton Affair", and wrote of her in 1975: So we start with the twins' arrival at school and their resistance to all St. Clare's customs, especially 'fagging' (and I don't blame them). However, instead of being developed into the main story, this rebellion is pretty short-lived, and by the sixth chapter or so their attitude has undergone a complete transformation. Elsie stayed down in the second form for the term - she should have really gone up to the third form. She is spiteful and Carlotta calls her ‘Catty Elisie’. There is a feud between her and the rest of the form. When Carlotta tries to invite her to her midnight feast, Elsie refuses, though she wants to go and plots to ruin it for the second formers. When Elsie sees Miss Theobald at the end of term Miss Theobald says she is not up to go to the third form in either behaviour or work, though she is too old to be in the second form. This suggests she may have a learning problem or just doesn't try very hard. At the very end of the book, Elsie shows a bit of a change in spirit and is nice to Gladys, who is sad that her mother is ill. Elsie is the main antagonist of the book but isn't mentioned in any other books in the series, so it is unknown whether she really turns over a new leaf or whether she reverts to her old ways. Seven Stories: Enid Blyton Collection Highlights", Seven Stories Collections Department , retrieved 22 June 2014She [Gwen] was beginning to be a little afraid of Maureen. Maureen was silly and affected - but she had a cunning and sly side to her nature, too. So had Gwen, of course. She recognized it easily in Maureen because it was in herself too. That was the dreadful part of this forced friendship with Maureen. It was like being friends with yourself, and knowing all the false, silly, sly things that went on in your own mind.
